Dr. Danielle Sterrenberg stands outside in a pink shirt and a white medical coat and smiles.

Dr. Sterrenberg is a board-certified medical oncologist and hematologist with 91传媒.

Her clinical and research interests center on the comprehensive care of patients with all types of malignancies and blood disorders, with a particular emphasis on breast cancer prevention and treatment. She treats patients at Keck Hospital of USC, USC Norris Cancer Hospital, USC Arcadia Hospital and USC Verdugo Hills Hospital. Here鈥檚 what you won鈥檛 find on her resume.

Her childhood dream was to be a country music star.

鈥淕rowing up, my biggest role model was Dolly Parton. After not making my elementary school鈥檚 choir, I quickly realized I would not become the country music star I dreamed of. I then settled on a more practical hope: becoming a rural family physician like the one I saw growing up in a small town in Arkansas.

I absolutely love what I do and would not trade this career for anything. But I still absolutely love 鈥80s and 鈥90s country music! It reminds me of my childhood.鈥

Family life keeps her busy.

鈥淲hen I鈥檓 not working, I maximize spending time with my husband and two young girls. Currently, I am leaning into my role as a dance and swim mom. My family and I also enjoy splitting our time between weekends at the beach or in the mountains of Big Bear, California. I love visiting Big Bear with my family. It reminds me of my rural roots and is a way for my kids to connect with nature.鈥

Her grandmother inspired her to become a cancer physician.

鈥淢y decision to become an oncologist was deeply in铿倁enced by the loss of my grandmother to breast cancer. Watching her battle the disease opened my eyes to the profound role that oncologists play, not only in treating the illness but in supporting patients and families through some of the hardest moments of their lives. I want to be part of the 铿乬ht against cancer, o铿ering hope, guidance and compassion, just as I wished someone could have done for our family.鈥

The most rewarding part of her job:

鈥淚t is twofold: seeing therapeutic success for my patients, and building deep, lasting relationships with them and their families.

Oncology is unique in that it demands both clinical precision and emotional presence. My patients inspire me. I want them to succeed. I understand that they are deeply loved and needed by their own families and communities, and they provide so much to so many people. I want them to be healthy and able to continue to lead ful铿乴ling lives.

Celebrating milestones like remission is incredibly ful铿乴ling, but just as meaningful is the trust and connection that form over time.鈥

She values this advice:

鈥淭he best advice I鈥檝e heard in my career has been 鈥楾reat the patient, not just the disease.鈥 It reminds me daily to see the whole person 鈥 their fears, goals, values. My bedside manner is warm, compassionate and rooted in active listening. I aim to create a space where patients feel comfortable sharing concerns and asking questions. I am here not only to guide someone through treatment but to walk with them each step.鈥

Her tip for medical students today:

鈥淚 would advise them to always stay curious and humble and to listen to your patients and trust them.鈥

She loves the teamwork at Keck Medicine.

鈥淚鈥檓 surrounded by colleagues who are leaders in their 铿乪lds, and I get to collaborate with nurses and navigators who are not only brilliant but deeply compassionate. It鈥檚 a privilege to be part of a group so dedicated to excellent patient care.

Our comprehensive approach to care sets us apart. Patients bene铿乼 from the expertise of multiple specialties working together, access to cutting-edge research and clinical trials and a team that leads with compassion at every step of the journey.鈥
